Let's face it, nobody likes crashing but unfortunately it's a part of cycling. I have heard many horrific stories about dislocated shoulders, broken teeth, scraped off skin, shattered collarbones and egos. Or in other words: not a lot of fun.
The possibility of crashing is always in the back of my mind and I knew it would happen sooner or later. However I always thought it would happen during a race. There's a big difference between racing and training. Understandably people take much greater risks when in a competition and that has certainly been my experience as well.
But ofcourse nothing ever happens like you think it will happen and this story is no exception. On a nice enough Wednesday morning in November, whilst training for the National Road Race Championships with Nicole, it happened. We were just settling into our routine doing TT-efforts at Murarrie, our local criterium track. I had just done my turn at the front and was trying to catch my breath and recover while drafting of Nicole. I lost my concentration for a split second and I remember touching Nicole's wheel and then BAM...
Next thing I remember are the very concerned faces of my BoomTime teammates staring down at me. And then the ambulance arriving, in a matter of seconds... I later found out a good 15 minutes had passed until the ambulance arrived. Apparently I was conscious and talking but I just cannot remember those 15 minutes. A few days after the accident I learned from one of my teammates, George (a nurse turned lawyer) I had been a very fiddly and disobedient patient, constantly trying to move and even taking my helmet off myself. This doesn't surprise me. Apparently I also lied about my age when asked. This also doesn't surprise me. I was also overly concerned about the state of my helmet. This doesn't surprise me either, helmets are expensive these days! The ambulance arrived and I was going to be taken to the hospital for a quick check up and the necessary x-rays. I was doing fine until I was in the back of the ambulance, on the phone with my husband Andrew, explaining to him what happened. Suddenly I was overwhelmed with emotions. That when I was given “The Whistle” by the ambo. Let me tell you that stuff is amazing! In a matter of minutes I was happy as Larry. Then I must have blacked out again because I cannot remember the rest of the trip. Convenient.
I remember being at the emergency department at the hospital and thinking how awesome it would be to work there; everyone was so happy and cheery and super nice! I only realised hours later the Whistle was to blame for making me see through rose-coloured glasses. Funny thing that! Andrew came in not much later and took me home.
I kept thinking how lucky I had been. Coming off at close to 40kph and not even a broken bone. Sure, my face was cut, my knees, elbows and fingers were busted up and I later found out I had a grade 1 AC-joint injury, which means a slight displacement of the joint. The acromioclavicular ligament may be stretched or partially torn. Sounds good doesn't it? Still, I consider myself very lucky. I was also very relieved didn't bring anyone else down with me in the crash.
I found out from Boothy my bike had survived the crash with minimal damage (+1 for Cannondale) and he would fix up any damages. He also replaced my busted helmet and glasses. What a champion!
I received so many kind messages from all my BoomTime teammates and friends in the next few days, it was heartwarming. I would like to thank everyone who was there that day for your help and support, with special thanks to Adrian, Nicole, George and Jack. It made the whole ordeal so much less traumatic.
Two days later I was back on the trainer and a day after that, back on the road. Unfortunately my shoulder remained very sore for a quite a while and I was given a cortisone injection by a sports physician to combat the pain. I also had to see a physio for a few months who helped me to regain my strength and maintain my range of movement in my shoulder. I'm not a 100% yet but getting there. I have gained a few hideous scars, but I have also gained the knowledge I won't let a crash deter me from following my dream and giving it my all.
Just a bit of a shame I won't be able to do any more knee modelling.
Safe riding and never overlap wheels!
